Her Majesty's Minister at Peking, has made known, at the request of the Governor, to receive British Legation, on the same terms as the Student-Interpreters for Consular Service. You will draw on the Government of Hongkong for your salary and allowances, except for quarters, which will be provided at the Legation. An equitable allowance will be made for your furniture, and travelling expenses.

You will proceed to Peking by the next mail-steamer in company with Mr Everard of the British Legation; and, on arrival there, you will report yourself to His Excellency Sir Harry Parkes, under whose orders you are placed during your residence in that Capital. The Chinese Secretary will direct your studies in the language; and assist in the work of the Legation, whenever the Minister may so instruct you.
